Halloween Gets Real with Freddy
October 31st – Halloween. To some, a silly American excuse to eat lollies and sugary crap, to others a time that marks the end of the harvest season. To me, it’s a time for awesome horror films, dressing up in strange costumes, making scary props (like hands of the dead reaching from their graves…mwahahaha!) and a time to try to scare the pants off absolutely everyone you can.
Needless to say, I LOVE HALLOWEEN! There is something so childishly raw about a day when you get a licence to throw on a daggy costume, embrace your inner horror and get your freak on.
But enjoying Halloween and having a bit of fun, does not have to mean an overload of sugar, crap and lollies. I’ve said it before, and I will repeat it again…YOU DON’T HAVE TO EAT CRAP! There is a choice. And besides, I feel quite bad handing out sugar to kids that knock on my door. I want to be a good role model, not a drug pusher who supplies addictive chemicals to innocent kids. I think we should be more responsible and start getting real about what we choose to eat and what we choose to feed our guests.
And to prove that you can feed your guests and trick or treaters healthily, whilst still having fun, I decided this year to make healthy Halloween goodies.
Before we get to the recipes, I think we better get everyone in the mood. Enter Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees and Fred Kruger. Names of three guys that have terrorised my screen and my sleep, time and time again. It’s just not Halloween without these guys!
First, my favourite, Michael Myers in the movie Halloween (click to listen). The music alone still makes me creep out, absolute heebie-jeebies people! I struggled to listen to it even now.
And then there’s Jason Voorhees, Friday 13th (click to watch). Not as scary as Michael if you ask me, but I wouldn’t say yes to a date with the guy. Shudder*
And finally, my main man Freddie Kruger from A Nightmare on Elm St. I kind of have a soft spot for Freddie, always in a trendy, red jumper and hat and he has a good sense of humour. Too bad about the skin though. In fact, Freddie has just signed a contract to be a poster boy for GRL and has just agreed to only eat Real Food for the rest of the year. Go Freddie! We support your healthy choices!
Now that I have the creeps, its time for the recipes!
Of course, you can make the standard raw chocolate treats and cup cakes, but I wanted to go a little more daring and crazy. It’s all about the fun after all, isn’t it! So here are my scary goodies for you to try out on Halloween this year. And don’t forget to watch my three scary boys and be sure to send them my love. Mwahahhahhahahaha!!!!
